Acme Droplets are single-minded little applications you place on your computer’s Desktop or in a folder that contains many items you often need to transfer to another location. The term ‘droplet’ represents that these applications were designed specifically to have the files and/or folders you want to transfer dropped on them. Each droplet is designed to instruct Acme Movers to perform a particular type of transfer, without having to reconfigure your control settings for Acme Movers — or even having to change control settings “on the fly.”
For information on customizing the way the droplets operate, see the section “Customizing Acme Droplets,” below.
NOTE: You must have the AppleScript extension installed on your machine to use the
Acme Droplets. If you’re not sure whether you have AppleScript installed on your
machine, just try using one of the droplets; it will display a dialog asking you to
install AppleScript if the extension is not installed.
ALSO NOTE: The first time you use each of the droplets, they will ask you where Acme
Movers 1.1 is located. After that, they will “remember” where it is.
If you want to move files or folders (whether from one spot to another on the
same volume, or from one volume to another without leaving a copy on the original
volume), drop them on Acme DropMove.
If you want to copy files or folders (whether from one volume to another, or
create a copy on the same volume and leave the original item where it is), drop
them on Acme DropCopy.
If you want to move files or folders from one location to another and
automatically create an alias of the files or folders where they originally were
(whether they’re moving from one spot to another on the same volume or from one volume to another), drop them on Acme DropAlias.
In each of these cases, all you have to do then is navigate the file dialog that appears to the folder where you want the items to end up and click the “Transfer to…” button (or type ⌘-M). Acme Movers automatically takes care of the rest — copying, moving, deleting and creating aliases as necessary to transfer the file using the mode you requested. It doesn’t get much simpler than that!

If you want to move files or folders to the Trash, simply drop them on Acme
DropDelete, and Acme Movers takes care of the rest.
Why would you want to drag items to Acme DropDelete, when it’s just as easy to drag items to the Trash? There are at least two reasons (and the industrious will probably find more):
(1.) If you set your Acme Movers control settings (or your Acme DropDelete control settings — see below) to automatically empty the Trash when Acme Movers quits, turn off the “Confirm before emptying” option and the Confirmation Dialog, Acme DropDelete will give you an “Auto-Emptying” Trash. You’ll never have to choose the “Empty Trash” menu item again!
(2.) If you turn on Acme Movers’ logging option, you can keep a log of every item you put in the Trash, simply by dragging it to Acme DropDelete instead of the Trash.
A future version of Acme Movers will give you even more reasons to use Acme DropDelete, when it adds the capability of letting you choose how Acme Movers deletes items: whether by placing them in the Trash, immediately deleting them or “shredding” them (with options ranging from a “fast shred” to a “Department of Defense” shred).
CAUTION: If you drop an alias on Acme DropDelete, the original item will be deleted and
NOT the alias itself. The only way Acme DropDelete can find out you dropped
something on it is by the Finder telling it so, and the Finder, in an attempt to be
helpful, ALWAYS resolves aliases dropped on an application before asking the application to open the items. (If you think about it, that’s logical behavior when you “open” an alias.)
If there is a way around this, we have yet to find it. But we’re still looking…
CUSTOMIZING ACME DROPLETS:
All four of the Acme Droplets may be customized in some way. Three of the droplets (Acme DropCopy, Acme DropMove and Acme DropAlias) may be set to automatically transfer whatever is dropped on them to a user-definable destination. This user-defined destination may later be cleared (causing the droplet to prompt you for a destination for the items dropped on it) or changed to a different destination.
NOTE: This does not apply to Acme DropDelete. Everything dropped on Acme DropDelete
is automatically transferred to the Trash.
Acme DropDelete may be customized to use a separate set of control settings from those Acme Movers normally uses.
POWER USER’S TIP: If you don’t want to use Auto-Transfer with Acme DropCopy, Acme
DropMove or Acme DropAlias (see below), but do want to use a different group of
presets for the droplet than the standard group of presets for Acme Movers, you
may do so.
Each of these three droplets, when they are not in auto-transfer mode, looks in the “Acme Movers Items” folder (in the “Preferences” folder of your System folder) for a Presets file named after them (i.e., Acme DropCopy looks for a Presets file named “Acme DropCopy Presets”; Acme DropMove looks for a Presets file named “Acme DropMove Presets”; and Acme DropAlias looks for a Presets file named “Acme DropAlias Presets”). If any of these droplets does not find a Presets file in the “Acme Movers Items” folder, it then loads the “normal” Acme Movers presets.
Use the technique outlined in Chapter 6, “Using Presets” to save Presets files with the correct names in the “Acme Movers Items” folder and those presets will be used for the droplets.
To quit using the custom presets for the droplets and return to using the “normal” Acme Movers presets, simply remove the appropriate Presets file from the “Acme Movers Items” folder. You may throw the Presets file in the Trash or simply move it to another folder (then, if you later want to start using the same presets for the droplet, all you have to do is move the file back into the “Acme Movers Items” folder).
NOTE: The standard License Agreement allows you to have multiple copies of the Acme
Droplets on your computer as long as you never have more than one copy of
Acme Movers in use at any given time. If you want to use multiple copies of Acme
Movers concurrently, you must license the number of copies you wish to use concurrently.
USING AUTO-TRANSFER MODE WITH DROPLETS:
NOTE: This section applies to Acme DropCopy, Acme DropMove and Acme DropAlias only.
Acme DropDelete always automatically transfers the items dropped on it to the
Trash; this cannot be changed.
“Normal” operation for Acme DropCopy, Acme DropMove and Acme DropAlias is to prompt you for a location to which you would like the item(s) you dropped on them transferred. However, if you prefer, you may set any or all of these three droplets to automatically transfer items to a destination you choose.
To instruct the droplet to begin automatically transferring items dropped on it and pick a destination for the transfers, double-click the droplet. A dialog box offering three choices will appear. These choices are “Choose…”, “Clear” and “Cancel.”

Choose…: Clicking this button turns auto-transfer on for the droplet and opens a file dialog allowing you to choose the folder to be used as the auto-transfer destination.
NOTE: The “Choose…” file dialog uses Apple Script standards for choosing a folder,
rather than the standards used elsewhere in Acme Movers. This means that you
must open a folder before selecting it. We purposely changed this in Acme Movers
because we found this to be an awkward way of doing things. Look for this change in a future version of the droplets as well.
Clear: Clicking this button turns auto-transfer off for the droplet and clears the folder you had previously set as the auto-transfer destination. After clicking this button, you will again be prompted for a destination for the items dropped on the droplet.
Cancel: Clicking this button cancels the dialog without changing the auto-transfer status.
POWER USER’S TIP: You may have multiple copies of any of the droplets on your
computer, each set to automatically transfer the items dropped on it to a
different location. We recommend renaming the droplet, if you do this, to indicate
what the destination of the transfer will be. Looking at the icon will tell give you a visual indication of the type of transfer that will occur when items are dropped on the icon, so the name of the droplet may be changed freely.
DROP DELETE CONTROL SETTINGS:
You may specify a separate set of control settings for Acme DropDelete. These control settings will then be used every time you drop items on the Acme DropDelete. Whenever you double-click Acme Movers or drop items on it, its own set of control settings will be used instead. The control settings you specify for Acme Movers will also be used for Acme DropDelete if you have not specifically created a separate set of control settings for it.
To assign a separate set of control settings for Acme DropDelete, simply double-click the droplet. A dialog box will appear offering you three choices: “Modify…”, “Use Standard” or “Cancel.”

Modify…: If you click this button, a Settings dialog box will appear allowing you to modify the settings to be used for Acme DropDelete. The settings are identical to those for Acme Movers (see Chapter 7, “General Control Settings”), although the settings that are not appropriate for Acme DropDelete will be inactive.

POWER USER’S TIP: If you set your Acme DropDelete control settings as shown in the
illustration above, you will have an “auto emptying trash.” You’ll never have to
choose the “Empty Trash” menu item again! Just drag items to Acme DropDelete
instead of the Trash.
The settings illustrated above will also log everything you Trash by dropping on Acme DropDelete. If you don’t want to log Acme DropDelete’s operations, simply unmark the “Log Activities” checkbox.
Use Standard: If you no longer want to use separate control settings for Acme DropDelete, but wish to use the Acme Movers control settings instead, click this button. Acme DropDelete’s settings will then be cleared and the control settings for Acme Movers will be used for Acme DropDelete as well.
POWER USER’S TIP: Acme DropDelete’s control settings are saved in a file named
“Acme DropDelete Prefs” in the “Acme Movers Items” folder (in the
“Preferences” folder of your System folder). When you click the “Use Standard”
button, this file is deleted. If you would like to use the control settings for Acme
Movers temporarily and then return to using the separate control settings for Acme DropDelete, move the file Acme Drop Delete Prefs out of the Acme Movers Items folder and then return it to this folder when you again wish to use separate control settings for Acme DropDelete.
Cancel: Click this button to dismiss the dialog without changing the status of Acme DropDelete control settings.
